SERVICES: MUSIC PRODUCTION

PRODUCER

A Producer oversees the entire recording process for an Artist from Pre-Production through to the final Mix and Mastering stages, delivering to the Artist, Record Label or Management Company a professionally finished recording. As a Producer I am contracted to manage and complete the full recording of an Artist’s or Band's music.

Every Artist or Band will have various levels of experience and recording requirements and there can never be a "generic" approach . Producer roles may or may not include song selection, song arrangement, performance coaching, time managing the studio process, sub contracting Engineer and Assistant roles (if required), Final Mixing and Mastering.

I draw on my extensive experience and a Musician, Sound Engineer and Producer when working with Artists and believe open communication and respect are essential elements of any successful project.

In addition effective pre-production can save $ down the track and will be a different process for every Artist. Pre-production for me in practical terms means attending gigs and rehearsals, listening to demos, preparing Pro Tools sessions, possibly producing more demos and just spending time with an Artist prior to commencing a recording.

RECORDING STUDIO ENGINEER

I spent my formative years as an Assistant Engineer at the highly regarded Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne, Australia, working on large iconic recording and mixing consoles like SSL and Neve. In that time I worked with some of the world’s best Producers and Engineers, learning the specialized process and detail involved in recording professional music before working myself as a freelance Audio Engineer.

The studio engineer is responsible for the placement of microphones and setting up the conditions for the musicians to be able to play and record comfortably. Attention is focussed on recording levels, pre-amp settings, compressors, and EQs amongst many other technical processes and working towards achieving the best possible recording.

STUDIO MIXING

Mixing is the final studio process by which all recorded sounds are combined into a final 2 channel stereo mix. Mixing music is regarded as an art in itself, fine tuning and balancing all the elements of a recording to achieve the desired outcome for an Artist.

Does it have energy? Is it exciting? Is it polished enough or it too polished? Have we achieved what is best for the song and not "over mixed" or veered to far from the original concept for the track.

Recording and mixing music is a highly technical and creative challenge and I always strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for my clients.

ONLINE MIXING

I am often contracted as an Online Music Mixing specialist and have clients from both overseas and interstate within Australia.

I am currently mixing the Adrian Gray project for London based Producer Joseph Defreitas which is an Urban/Pop recording due for release in 2016. I have provided finished stereo mixes back to my client ready for mastering along with "PA" backing track mixes for Live gigs.

While mixing, progress mixes are sent back to the client for immediate feedback and alterations made almost in real time. Communication is vital for a successful outcome along with trust and discretion and all work and audio recordings treated with total confidentiality.

ONLINE MIXING - PREPARATION

Sending audio files for mixing is a simple process of the Artist or Producer uploading their files and emailing the link to CC Sound Design via Dropbox or any preferred file transfer site and I will mix your track to a high spec stereo audio file and return.

STEP 1

REMOVING PLUG INS:

After you open up your session in whatever DAW you are using you’ll need to remove all eq’s, compressors, reverbs, etc. from your tracks. I recommend you leave in creative effects like distortion, flange, autotune or any other effect that your absolutely happy with the sound and don’t need us to recreate it.

STEP 2

LABELING YOUR TRACKS:

Once you’ve removed all the effects from your tracks, you’ll need to properly label them prior to exporting so we can clearly understand what track is what as follows:

1. lead vocal, 2. lead guitar, 2. bass, 3. snare etc

STEP 3

BOUNCING TRACKS (One at A Time):

A few programs out there allow you to bounce all tracks in one shot and some you’ll have to do one at a time as follows:

1. Highlight your song starting from 0.00 till the end of the song. This will dictate where your bounce will start and stop, It is very important that all your tracks start at the same point so all the songs elements will line up correctly.

2. Solo one track at a time then press the bounce to disk option (or export option) to a new folder. One folder per song please to avoid confusion. (make sure you bounce the tracks in wav or AIFF format in 24 or 16 bit and the sample rate of 44.100 Hz or above).

Note: You should export the files in the same sample rate they were recorded as it would be a waste to export them as 24 bit if they were recorded as 16 bit. It will create unnecessarily large files which take longer to upload.

3. Now you’ll need to repeat steps 2 for the remainder of the tracks (make sure to convert all virtual instruments to audio files).

STEP 4

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR FILES BEFORE SENDING:

To ensure you’ve properly exported the Wav files, you can do the following simple test to confirm all your elements line up correctly.

1. Create a new blank session
2. Import all of the tracked out wavs (They should be identical length if you exported from the same starting and end point)
3. Listen through the song to ensure everything is there and in the right place.

STEP 5

SENDING YOUR FILES:

1. Most of my clients are using large file sharing sites like yousendit.com or wetransfer.com which is a simple process of uploading your files and entering the email address chris@ccsounddesign.com.au. Alternatively I can link you to my Dropbox to upload your files.

2. Please include a rough mix in MP3 format of your song(s) for our reference. Also, its helpful if you send us an industry song in MP3 format that you admire the quality of so I can try to match it. (Within reason of course)

And absolutely please don't hesitate to ask for help or advice in regards to any aspect of preparing your session for CC Sound Design.

CONFIDENTIALITY

All your work and data in every aspect remains YOUR property and CC Sound Design takes your ownership and confidentiality very seriously.
